Brighton and London Trip-- Part 1

Hi guys! A couple weekends ago (March 14th-15th), Jennifer and I decided to take a trip to Brighton, then spend the next day in London to do all of the touristy stuff that we missed the first time we were there. I decided to break this post into two parts, so here is the first part on Brighton!

We left for Brighton the morning of March 14th. Brighton is a little seaside town, about a 4 hour train ride away from Leeds, and I was so excited to be near the sea again (I miss California)! As soon as we got there, we checked into our hostel (which was directly across from the pier!), then went to grab some fish and chips for lunch. And it was delicious! We haven't gone out to eat too much since being here so once we finished eating, we sat at the table for another 10-15 minutes before we realized that we actually had to go pay for our meals at the front of the restaurant rather than have the check brought to us.

After lunch, we went to wander around the town. We were hoping for some sun while we were near the ocean, but in true English fashion, it was freezing cold and extremely foggy! As we were walking toward the pier, you will never guess what we came across... the Doughnut Groyne! I guess it's used for preventing beach erosion or something, but we had a good time laughing at the name and taking pictures on it! :D

We walked down by the water and took some pictures of the pier. It looked so pretty surrounded by all that fog!

There's rocks on the beach instead of sand... *shaking my head*

Walking around the pier was my favorite part of the day! It was huge and there was so much to do! They had an arcade, a carousel, a fun house, and a bunch of rides! It was like being at a carnival and I can imagine it being so much fun and packed with people in the spring and summer.

Even thought it was freezing cold outside, we just had to buy ice cream while we were near the ocean! They even came with a 'flake', which was a flaky chocolate stick! Yum!

That night, we went wandering around a little shopping area in Brighton called The Lanes. It was full of little alleyways lined with shops and cafes (I forgot to take pictures of it... oops!). I could imagine myself strolling through The Lanes on a warm, summer day.

We decided to head back to the hostel a bit earlier that night after a quick dinner at Subway because we had to catch an early train to London the next morning. We had stayed in a hostel before, but it had been rented out just for our group so we hadn't actually had a true hostel experience until this night. And it turned out to be very... interesting. Our room was directly over the bar, which was blasting music until 2am! So I just accepted the fact that I wasn't going to get much sleep that night. Other than that, it was pretty similar to what I imagined staying in a hostel would be. But the same was not true for Jennifer!

When we checked into the hostel earlier in the day, there was a girl in the room (I believe she was from somewhere in South America) that had been asleep all day because she was sick. Apparently, as I was attempting to fall asleep that night, Jennifer (on the bunk above me) was trying to get situated and fix up the bed so that she could go to sleep as well. But the beds were extremely squeaky! Because I didn't have my contacts in, I had no idea what was going on, but the same girl that had been in the room all day (and that was playing music on her laptop as I was trying to sleep) was not happy with the beds squeaking. Jennifer tells the story a lot better, but apparently the girl just sat up in the dark room (while her face was being illuminated from below by her laptop) and glared at Jennifer for a good 10 seconds. Once Jennifer realized it was because of the squeaking bed, she was careful not to make any more noise, but because I had no idea what was going on, I continued to move about and get comfortable. This led to Jennifer getting more glares from this girl before she slowly lowered herself back into her bed. The way Jennifer tells the story reminds me of something from a horror movie right before the creepy girl comes out with her knife. Lol. I didn't know all of this had happened until the next day so I thought it was hilarious, but Jennifer was scared for her life that night! Hahahaha. Good times.

We left bright and early the next morning for London. Aside from the hostel experience, Brighton was very nice and I was so glad that I got a little reminder of California near the sea! Now if only it would warm up a little bit over here! ;)

Part 2 will be up sometime in the next couple of weeks! Our Spring Break just started, so we are heading to Scotland tonight for the weekend, then will be going to Paris and a couple cities in Italy! I will be sure to take lots of pictures and will have a ton of posts to update you guys with when we get back!

Medieval York

Hello everyone and Happy St. Patrick's Day! A few weekends ago (Saturday, March 1st), Jennifer and I went on another day trip with our friend Gaby and her friend Berni. This time, we went to the cute medieval town of York, which is only a short train ride away from Leeds. When planning to study abroad, Jennifer and I were originally wanting to go to the university in York, but it was only an option for students studying abroad for the whole year. The town just looked so adorable so we knew we had to visit it sometime while we were here. And I am so glad that we did!

York is a historic Roman town located in North Yorkshire, England. The whole town is surrounded by medieval walls that stretch for about 2 miles around the city. They even have a Jorvik Viking Centre!

Upon entering the city, we followed the walls and passed over the River Ouse, which is the major river flowing through York. It was a nice sunny day and there were some people kayaking on the river beneath us.

This was taken right before a bird decided to poop on the zipper of my jacket that I'm holding on to. Good aim!
We didn't have many plans for the day, so we spent most of our time roaming the city and window shopping. The streets of the city were lined with adorable shops and boutiques. I could spend all day just browsing through the little shops!

So classy, York!

This soap company in York had cakes and cupcakes that were made out of soap! They look good enough to eat!
We decided to stop into York's Chocolate Story which was a shop full of delicious looking chocolates and other souvenirs (but I didn't see any York peppermint patties ;) ). They even had a chocolate cafe where you could order drinks, fondue, and other chocolatey desserts! I didn't end up buying anything but it was very tempting! They also had the option of taking a tour and learning about the history of chocolate in York, but we just stuck to the shop and cafe.

As we were walking around the town, we passed by Clifford's Tower which is sat up on a hill on the outskirts of York. In Spring, the hill is covered with blooming flowers and I can imagine it would be so pretty!

Earlier in the day, we were at the visitors center and a lady told us that the York Dungeon was a must-see, so we headed there next. I was expecting to get to wander around in old dungeons and maybe see some prison cells or something. Boy, was I wrong. The York Dungeon was more of an interactive attraction. While we were waiting in line, we noticed a man walking around in full makeup and costume, entertaining the guests. We were let into the building in small groups and were then led into different rooms and told creepy stories of the "dark history" of York while the actors attempted to scare us. It was basically a mediocre version of one of the mazes at Knott's Scary Farm. While it was definitely entertaining, I don't think I would pay to see it again.

After the dungeon, we were so hungry but we were planning on going to afternoon tea later in the day so Jennifer and I stopped off for some crepes to tide us over. Jennifer got an apple cinnamon crepe while I opted for a Nutella crepe. Yum!

We then headed over to Betty's Cafe Tea Rooms for afternoon tea. Before coming to York, we heard about Betty's Tea Rooms and knew we had to have our first afternoon tea there! These tea rooms were so popular that we had to wait in line for about an hour before we were let inside but it was so worth the wait!

I am so glad that we made this stop! Everything was set up so nicely and we ordered the traditional afternoon tea. At £18.50, it was a bit pricey but we figured we had to have the full afternoon tea experience while we were in England and it was so worth it! We were first served a pot of tea with milk and sugar cubes. Because I am not a huge fan of tea, I couldn't even finish my first cup, but the food was amazing and so fancy! The food was brought out on individual three-tiered silver stands. We were served a selection of sandwiches (including Scottish smoked salmon and cream cheese, roast Yorkshire ham, roast free-range chicken breast, and egg mayonnaise and cress); a sultana scone with strawberry jam and clotted cream; and a selection of miniature desserts (including a pistachio macaron, a little chocolate cake square (which tasted a little strange, almost like it had rum in it or something), and a mini berry tart). Everything was seriously delicious! My favorites were the chicken breast sandwich, the scones, and the mini berry tart. I felt like a proper English lady! It was definitely the highlight of my day!

The tea... blegh. But it looks so pretty!
The finger sandwiches... mmmmm!

The desserts! So tasty!
Pretending that I'm enjoying the tea :)
Delicious scone!

On our way out, we had to stop and peer into the windows with awe at the giant chocolate eggs decorated with flowers! You could purchase the biggest egg in the center for a whopping £250! They also sold adorable chocolate otters and chocolate beavers! :)

Sorry about the glare on the window!

After tea, we wandered around window shopping a little bit more before ending the day with a visit to the York Minster. It was such a pretty building, and was lined with impressive stained glass windows.

After walking through the York Minster, we headed through a park and back over the River Ouse to the train station to head back to Leeds!
